Katie Goes for the Gold

Katie and Mrs SnyderKatie Gutt, a Junior at Weddington High School, is working on her Gold Award, the highest award that can be earned in Girl Scouts.  Her focus is literacy education at the elementary school level.

"The main goal of my project was to support the Spanish-English literacy program at Rocky River. The first part of my project involved collecting more than 50 bilingual children's books for the school. With the help of several friends and Mrs. Snyder, we processed the books and made them available for check out in the media center. The second part of my project was to implement a "Country of the Week" program in the media center during the month of February. Each week there will be a display about a different Spanish-speaking country as well as a "Question of the Week" contest and an age-appropriate activity sheet that each child can pick up. It is my hope that the new books and knowledge of the different countries will spark interest in both English and Spanish learning because they are very important to our current society, and I have a great interest in them as well." Mrs Snyder said, "We are so excited about the benefits from this project in our Media Center.  There are 50 new bilingual books, in the 460 section, for the students and families here at Rocky River".

Amber and Heather told us all about Dumbledorm, the Great Horned Owl, as we watched him fly and eat. One cool new fact that we learned was that Dumbeldor's favorite food is skunk! EW!
