Visiting Vietnam
Introducing the second graders of Rocky River to my birthplace was a fun task. Opening up with a video, of my own cousin speaking Vietnamese, that introduced me and asked them if they were ready to journey with me to Vietnam. Then proceeding to show them what the countryside looked like, through a short video that highlighted the beauty of Vietnam.

New Zealand
On May 7th, as part of Rocky River’s focus on global learning, Susie Colbath spoke to the students about the country of New Zealand. She introduced her presentation by referring to a book series she loved when she was in the second grade called “The Happy Hollisters.” In this series, the five Hollister children and their parents travel all over the country and the world having adventures and solving mysteries. It made Mrs. Colbath want to travel to these places herself when she grew up. One way she was able to do this was by working in the national parks. However, the parks either closed or reduced staff in the winter, so she and a friend decided to travel during the off-season. They chose New Zealand because its summer is our winter, because it is safe (even the policemen don’t carry firearms), and because the people are friendly and speak English. They traveled for two months with backpacks.
